The Daily Life of a Typical Greek Male
Men of Ancient Greece ran the government and spent a lot of time away from home. They were very productive, and enjoyed spending time in the fields, sailing, hunting and trading. The men also liked hosting drinking parties after a long day's work. These parties included the events of wrestling and horse riding. The wives and daughters were not allowed to attend these parties, as it was a man's night only. Most men had their hair cut short, and beards were in fashion. Only the soldiers wore their hair long. Like modern day women excange idle gossip in a cafe, men in ancient greece exchanged gossip at the barber shop while getting their hair cut.
The Daily Life of a Typical Greek Female
Women in ancient greece had limited freedom outside of their house, and the only events they could attend were funerals, religous events, visiting temples for guidance from the gods or visit other female neighbours, with their husband's permission (if permission was not given the woman was not allowed to attend the event). Although outside the house, the males were in charge of their wives. At home, women were in charge of everybody in the household (slaves, daughters, sons, husbands etc.) The women had a hard job. They had to run the house, bear children and make clothes for the family, but they did not do any housework at all. The female slaves had to cook, clean and work in the fields. Male slaves watched the door and tutored the male children until age 6-7.
The Daily Life of a Typical Greek Newborn Baby
All children were considered youths until you reached age 30yrs. When Greek babies were born, their father would dance around the house, with the baby in his arms, to ward off evil spirits. To scare off evil spirits the Greeks also decorated their doorways with olives for a boy and wool for a girl. Friends and family would send gifts for the new baby
