Upper Class:
To become a member of the upper class, you must be a citizen of Greece. You cannot have a job as you must find time for government, war, literature and philosophy. You must also make sure that you are free from all economic tasks. Your slaves take care of your property and fortune for you. Lastly, you must be of the leisure class
Middle Class (perikos)
The middle class is made up of a large number of non-citizens that was made up of free men of forign birth, who were inelegble for citizenship, and most spent their life in Athens. These people were willing to give up their right to vote, and their citizenship, as they were offered better job opportunities as a non-citizen, and could not as make as good of a living in other cities. Some of these jobs that were offered were merchants, artists, manufacturers, tradesmen etc.
Lower Class:
The lower class was made up of the free men who had once been slaves in their life. Since these people were all non citizens, the best class they could be was the middle class. Slaves could be freed by paying themselves off ,or their family could pay them off. Slaves could be freed by fighting in a war to prove their loyalty, they could be freed by their master dying and setting them free in his will. If a slave was bought to tutor a child, the slave would be freed upon the child's graduation. The Greeks believed that, unlike the present day, all men were not equal, and that only the upper class could vote. There was no greater disgrace than being stripped of your citizenship.
